Seto Shuzo / Honjozo Series
[Design Concept]
This series adopts the traditional Japanese "Ichimatsu" pattern as a unifying design format, reinterpreted through a modern sensibility. The goal was to create visual consistency across the lineup while allowing each product’s individuality to shine. At the heart of this concept is the desire to clearly and memorably express the welcoming character of honjozo sake, the sense of quality upheld by Seto Shuzo, and the distinct personality of the Azumacho brand.
[Design Philosophy: The Symbolism of the Ichimatsu Pattern]
At the core of the design is the Ichimatsu pattern, used consistently across the series. This motif, which extends endlessly in all directions, is traditionally associated with auspicious meanings such as “prosperity of descendants” and “business growth.” I chose this pattern to reflect a heartfelt wish: that this approachable honjozo sake will quite literally spread far and wide, reaching many hands and being enjoyed by people from all walks of life for years to come.
With its grid of four square sections, the Ichimatsu layout also lends itself naturally to organizing information and enhancing brand consistency across the series.
[Color Identity and Recognition]
Each label features a two-color palette—white, paired with a distinct key color that represents the individual product. For example, “Maruhei Blue” uses a vibrant blue, while “Ginmon” adopts a refined silver. This clear visual coding improves both recognizability and memorability at a glance.
[Subtle Pattern Expression through UV Printing]
In the white squares, we avoided color altogether and instead used clear UV printing to delicately embed symbolic patterns for each product. These patterns reveal themselves only when catching the light—creating a subtle interplay of visibility, texture, and discovery. This detail, though quiet at first glance, introduces a refined tactile experience and a contemporary sense of quality.
[Unifying the Series: Brand Identity at the Top Left]
To reinforce unity across the lineup, the top-left square features the dynamic handwritten Azumacho logo alongside the brand's traditional red seal. This consistent placement serves as a powerful visual anchor, representing Seto Shuzo’s enduring identity, proud heritage, and unwavering commitment to quality.
[Expressing Individuality: Colors and Symbols]
To differentiate each item within the series, we varied three key elements:
- Key Colors:
"Maruhei Blue" uses a vivid blue; "Ginmon" features an elegant silver—each instantly conveying the character of the product.
- Symbolic Motifs:
The transparent UV-printed circular emblems in the white area differ for each product, adding layers of meaning and distinction.
- Product Names:
Displayed in the bottom-right square in a clean, modern typeface—names like “MARUHEI BLUE” and “GINMON” ensure clarity and legibility.
[Our Vision for the Series]
Through this design system, we aimed to reinterpret traditional Japanese motifs in a way that fits seamlessly into modern lifestyles. From visual harmony when displayed side by side, to ease of selection on the shelf, every aspect was considered.
This series aspires to embody the approachable nature of honjozo sake, the craftsmanship and quality of the Azumacho brand, the balance of tradition and modernity, and stories rooted in the brewery’s history. Like the Ichimatsu pattern that expands outward without end, we hope this lineup will continue to reach new hands and hearts—from first-time sake drinkers to seasoned connoisseurs—and be loved for generations to come.

Seto Shuzo / Junmai Winter Scenery
[Design Concept]
At the heart of this design is a quiet reverence for the serene beauty of a Japanese winter—a season marked by stillness, purity, and a crystalline clarity in the air. Our goal was to capture not only the visual landscape, but also the emotional atmosphere that makes winter in Japan so deeply evocative.
[Visual Expression]
The main visual depicts snow gently falling over a layered expanse of mountains—an image not meant to portray a specific place, but rather a universal winter scene that many carry in their hearts. Rooted in the aesthetic sensibility of traditional Japanese ink paintings and woodblock prints, the composition uses delicate gradients and overlapping layers to evoke a sense of modern depth and tranquility.
It is designed to awaken within the viewer a feeling of quiet awe—the kind of calm, cleansing peace that comes from standing in the presence of nature’s winter stillness.
[Color Palette]
To best convey the essence of winter, we intentionally kept the color scheme restrained. Muted greys with subtle hints of blues and purples define the cool-toned palette, enhancing the atmosphere of calm and silence.
Across the entire surface, fine white flecks—representing falling snow—add not only a sense of motion and texture, but also a visual metaphor for the sake’s own clarity and purity. Far from evoking coldness alone, this use of white introduces a sense of refinement and freshness that mirrors the sake itself.
[Typography]
The name “Azumacho” is gently placed in vertical script at the lower right corner, quietly harmonizing with the wintry landscape. The typography draws on traditional calligraphy, yet remains understated and clean, echoing the overall aesthetic of restraint and refinement.
Without speaking loudly, it conveys a sense of dignity and quiet confidence—a visual whisper of the sake’s origins and craftsmanship.
[The Intention Behind the Design]
This package is more than a container—it is a vessel for storytelling. From the moment one picks it up, the design aims to evoke the quiet imagery of winter, setting the stage for the tasting experience to come.
It is meant to heighten anticipation, deepen appreciation, and quietly reflect the values of Seto Shuzo: sincerity, humility, and an unwavering dedication to honest sake-making.
Through this understated design, we hope that the quality of the sake—and the philosophy behind it—speaks not with bold declarations, but with the serene eloquence of winter itself.

Seto Shuzo / Hojicha Liqueur "Dark Amber"
[Design Concept]
This design seeks to visually express the deep, roasted aroma unique to hojicha, the sense of rich, contemplative time it evokes, and the elegant radiance embodied by the name "Kohaku"—meaning amber.
[Motif and Color Palette]
At the center of the design is the tea leaf—the origin of hojicha itself. But this is no ordinary leaf. Rendered with a warm, metallic sheen reminiscent of bronze and copper, the motif captures both the lustrous glow of amber and the rich, toasty aroma born of roasting.
Deeper-toned leaves are subtly layered in to evoke the complexity and depth of flavor that defines this unique liqueur.
Careful attention was paid to the fine detailing of the leaf veins, celebrating the natural beauty of botanical forms while also lending the design a refined, premium feel. The background features a deep, dark gradient, which not only enhances the presence of the central leaf motif but also conveys a sense of luxury and calm—perfectly suited to an indulgent, evening moment of relaxation.
[Typography]
The product name, Kohaku, is set vertically in a bold Mincho-style typeface—chosen for its graceful, dignified presence that mirrors the timeless beauty suggested by the name.
Supporting text, such as “Roasted Tea Liqueur”, uses a clean, modern sans-serif font for clarity and contemporary balance. White typography stands out crisply against the dark background, ensuring legibility while enhancing the overall elegance.
[Our Intention]
Through this package design, we aimed to offer a sensory preview of the luxurious experience that awaits: the deep, roasted fragrance of hojicha, its mellow flavor, and the warm, relaxing time it brings.
By expressing the natural beauty of tea leaves through a sophisticated lens, we sought to highlight the harmony between tradition—embodied by hojicha—and modernity, as represented by the liqueur and the design itself.
This is not just a beverage—it is a crafted moment, infused with warmth, elegance, and quiet indulgence.

Seto Shuzo / Matcha liqueur "Jade Green"
[Design Concept]
This design captures the vivid green hue and fresh aroma unique to matcha, while visually expressing the elegance and depth embodied in the name "Hisui"—meaning jade. With a light and refreshing artistic touch, we aimed to convey the refined essence of both the tea and the liqueur it becomes.
[Motif and Artistic Style]
The central motif is the fresh tea leaf—the very origin of matcha. Rather than photorealism, the leaf is depicted with a soft, watercolor-like touch, suggesting the smooth texture of matcha and the delicate ritual of whisking it.
Subtle shifts in color and light bring each leaf to life, creating a sense of volume and natural movement. This expression reflects the vitality of nature while resonating with the smooth, rounded flavors of the liqueur itself.
[Color Scheme and Background]
The primary color is green—a direct reference to both matcha and the gemstone jade. From light, sprouting greens to deeper, matured tones, layered shades of green express the complexity of flavor and the natural richness of the tea.
The background continues this tone-on-tone palette, enhanced with soft textures that resemble the blooming of watercolor pigment. This unity between foreground and background creates a gentle, natural ambiance.
In the lower left, a shimmering highlight was added—evoking dew-dropped leaves in morning light, or matcha particles glimmering as they catch the light. This element serves as a subtle accent, enhancing both the freshness and perceived quality of the product.
[Typography]
The product name Hisui is placed vertically in a dignified Mincho-style typeface, mirroring the elegance of its counterpart, Kohaku, and reinforcing the brand’s design consistency.
Supporting text such as “Matcha Liqueur” and its English equivalents use a modern, legible sans-serif font, ensuring clarity and drawing attention to the main visual without distraction. This careful balance of typefaces preserves the harmony between tradition and contemporary design across the series.
[The Intention Behind the Design]
This package aims to offer a sensory prelude to the experience of Hisui—inviting the drinker to anticipate its freshly-picked aroma, vibrant green color, and refined, soothing taste.
By presenting nature’s bounty with sophistication and care, the design conveys a quiet sense of luxury and a promise of gentle, enriching moments.
With its lush, verdant visuals, Hisui stands as a slightly special bottle—meant not only to be consumed, but to be experienced.

Sentoku Shuzo / Hebesu
[Design Concept]
This design captures the vibrant freshness and zesty charm of Hebesu—a citrus fruit native to Miyazaki—through a playful, modern visual language. Inspired by the feeling of sun-soaked juiciness and bright, uplifting energy, the look is designed to be both refreshing and fun.
[Hebesu as the Star: A Lively Realism]
The undisputed star of this design is the Hebesu fruit itself. To convey its natural juiciness and crisp aroma as directly as possible, a bold, central photograph of a sliced Hebesu is used. The vivid citrus flesh and glistening, almost dripping juice visually evoke its tangy freshness and subtle sweetness—inviting the viewer to imagine that first invigorating sip.
[Background and Color Palette: A Pop Contrast]
In striking contrast to the realism of the fruit, the background adopts a clean, graphical layout. Diagonally split into vivid turquoise green and playful bright pink, the bold color blocks suggest the energy and effervescence of Hebesu—while also highlighting the fun, approachable side of this sake-based liqueur.
The juxtaposition between photorealism and flat graphics creates a modern, eye-catching contrast that’s sure to stand out on the shelf.
[Typography: Playfulness Meets Trust]
The product name, “Hebesu no Osake” (Hebesu Liqueur), is set in a chunky, retro-inspired display font that adds both personality and memorability. Its pop tone reflects the easy-drinking, casual spirit of the liqueur, and hints at its creative, cocktail-friendly possibilities.
Meanwhile, the name of the producer—Sentoku Shuzo, Miyazaki’s only sake brewery—is placed subtly in the bottom left using a classic, more reserved typeface, adding a quiet layer of authenticity and trust to balance the overall playful tone.
[Our Intention]
From the moment you see the package, we want you to think:
“That looks delicious!” “That looks fun!” “I want to try it!”
We designed this label to express that kind of bright, spontaneous energy—visually echoing the exciting, new feeling of a sake-based liqueur made with fresh Hebesu from Miyazaki.
Whether enjoyed with soda or mixed into a cocktail, this drink promises a refreshing, casual moment.
We hope this design sparks joy and anticipation—just like that first sparkling sip.
